Accessibility Statement

Our commitment to making Histories Today accessible to everyone.

Our Commitment

Histories Today is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We continually improve the user experience for everyone, and apply relevant accessibility standards to help users with disabilities access the site as effectively as possible.

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, as published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

What We Are Doing

  • Semantic HTML: We use structured, semantic HTML5 so that screen readers and assistive technologies can interpret content correctly.
  • Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements are reachable and operable via keyboard.
  • Colour contrast: We aim to maintain a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.
  • Alt text: Images include descriptive alternative text for screen reader users.
  • ARIA labels: Interactive components use ARIA roles and labels to communicate their purpose to assistive technologies.
  • Responsive design: The site is fully responsive and usable on mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.
  • Dark mode: A dark mode toggle is available for users who prefer reduced brightness or have light sensitivity.
  • Focus indicators: Visible focus indicators are maintained on all interactive elements.

Known Limitations

While we strive for full accessibility, some areas are still being improved:

  • Some older, Wikipedia-sourced event descriptions may contain complex nested HTML structures that can be challenging for screen readers.
  • Some third-party embeds (maps, widgets) may have their own accessibility limitations that are beyond our control.
  • The rich-text article editor (Quill.js) has limited screen reader support in some configurations.

We are actively working to address these areas.
